Dr. Chief (Mrs.) Beatrice Obiageli Ubeku JP, MFR.

The name Beatrice Obiageli Ubeku, also fondly called Betty, has continued to ring a bell as a humanitarian and a passionate promoter of youth, children and women development both in Nigeria and at the International level. …As She Beamed With Commitement And Thank God That Her Dear Husband & Father-Abel Kprogidi Ubeku, LLM, Phd, OFR -HER SOUL MATE OF YEARS AFTER-ALL POSITIONED AND ENDEARED HER WITH THIS UNIQUE LEGACY SKILL GROOMING… No doubt various women groups showcased her at the ceremony with their Countries Flags to adore Betty Ubeku- A Woman of Substance, Humanitarian per Excellence in her field of endeavor. Mrs. Ubeku was born on April 8, 1948 and she hails from Isoko South Local Government Area in Delta State. She holds a B.Sc. (Hons) in Business Administration from University of Lagos Akoka, Yaba, Lagos. She worked at the Defence Ministry, Apapa, Lagos before she moved to UAC Niger House 12th Floor, Headquarters Marina, at the Office of the Chairman of UAC and later made her mark at the Standard Bank Nigeria Limited, now renamed First Bank Plc.

EARLY LIFE:

Chief (Mrs.) Ubeku as a young girl lived with her parents in Apapa, Lagos. Mrs. Ubeku’s involvement in charitable organizations and in the desire to influence the lives of others for the better was inspired by her mother’s openness and kindness to other distant relatives; willing to accommodate, feed and care for them despite living in a small room. Since retirement, Chief (Mrs.) Ubeku, has been involved in charitable and humanitarian services with various NGOs/CBOS. Her first link with humanitarian services could be traced back to the “SOS” Children’s village, Isolo, Lagos in the 1970s, where she was known to have made regular visits, presentation of various gifts and hosting of the inmates on weekends. This spurred her into recently championing the building and furnishing of a “Documentation Block” at the permanent site of the Motherless Babies Home at Lekki, the Lagos State “Lions Village” as the President of Lekki Lions Intl’ Club, District 404 Nigeria 1978/9. Also, a similar project was done in Delta State, Isoko South LGA, where she contributed immensely to the Children’s Pediatric Ward in 1993 with the support of UNICEF and 1998 respectively as the project coordinator and President of Ewehayae Isoko Women Association Of Nigeria(EIAN).

Having retired voluntarily in 1978, Beatrice Ubeku with seasoned networking skills ability into her human driven passion has created a niche for her locally and internationally. She contributed, in a unique way, to charity and got involved in a number of Non -Governmental organizations, choosing charitable activities that most young ones emerged super role models. Her styling activities and zeal into touch and reach community survival strategy for sustained development for rural populace and humanity.
She has earned several National and International Awards, recognizes and belongs to the exalted league of honorees’. She the National Treasurer - Association of National HEROES AWARDEES (ANHA) and the Founder of a reputable NGO Women Care Association of Nigeria (WOCAN)-‘Reach And Touch’ after she successfully played a lead during her participation at the 4TH World Women Conference China Beijing 1995. Having served severally under various organizations to mention National Council of Women’s Societies (NCWS) an Affiliate of the International Council of Women(ICW) based in Paris, Lions Clubs International Multiple District 404N, International Women Society (lWS), Young Women Christian Association(YWCA), Ewhaeyae Isoko Association of Nigeria(EIAN) among others.

In the same vein, she has been very active in networking and collaborating with various NGOs and Community Based Organizations under the National Council of Women’s Societies (NCWS) Leadership Mrs Emily Aig-Imoukhuede, Hajia Liaila Dongonyaro, Mrs Esther Sambo, Mrs. Zainab Maina CON, served under Chief Mrs O. Olakunri OFR Int’l Lions Club among others to champion the course of children and women awareness, as well executed various developmental programmes both local and international levels.

She emerged as Nigerian delegate and member of the Preparatory Team Steering Committee to Dakar, in 1994, China and in 1995 where she was mandated to prepare and present a finished Craft Work on behalf of Nigerian Women with other countries for twining at the Great Wall for Peace Mission in Beijing, China, at the NGOs local level forum under the African platform of action which earned her an Interview by CNN International globally and national coverage made Nigeria proud in 1995.

Also, this show of commitment enabled her further as a delegate participant at the on going conference at UN Level the same year 1995 where Mrs. Ubeku was again, among those who received a “Torchlight” a Baton to touch other women including the children, a growth at the grass roots to commemorate the UN, China Beijing’95.

Following this, she initiated a Networking Organisation named Women Care Association of Nigeria [WOCAN] a philanthropic organization, a non-governmental, non-religious, non-partisan and non-profit oriented organization set up by a group of compassionate, selfless women pooled from various ethnic and professional backgrounds with the overall aim of improving the lot of the down trodden masses in response to the 1995 Beijing platform for action. Motto: Reach Out and Touch to address such issues as Mother and Child Survival developmental Strategy., in September 1995.
With special focus on the plight of the African women in all geo-political settings in the continent, WOCAN aims at evolving and engaging in various programmes and activities which will not only raise the hopes and aspiration of mothers, children and youths, but will also bridge the gap between the poverty stricken and opulent thereby creating an enabling environment for all. WOCAN is a voice of change with its programmes and activities geared towards providing the target audience entrepreneurial capabilities for economic self sustenance.

In the 80’s- Mrs Ubeku’s proven contributions, leadership in International Lions-‘We Serve’ under the Nigeria Multiple District 404A&B, Lions Clubs International have equally showered Lion Ubeku with several Int’l Awards and National recognitions in appreciation of her invaluable services and cooperation Certificates including a Plaque-Woman of Honour for her Distinguished Services extended to humanity generally.
Her leadership quality earned her a position as Chairperson under the International Association Lions Clubs Multiple District 404 Nigeria to coordinate it’s activities to mark its 31st annual historical Lions event with United Nations held in Nigeria, at the Nigeria Institute International Affairs Lagos; the theme: Peace & Leadership in Africa 2008/9 including youths the Leos young ones. The success of her role under the Fmr. Head of State-General Yakubu Gowon, GCFR., earned Mrs. Ubeku an International Lions PRESIDENT’S COMMENDATION AWARD FOR DISTINGUISHING HERSELF AS AN “EVERYDAY HERO BY CREATING MIRACLES THROUGH SERVICE”…

In 1997, due to her sterling quality, Mrs. Ubeku as a delegate of National Council of Women Societies (NCWS) was among those nominated at the International Conference of the African First Ladies Peace Summit held at that time in Abuja as a member of the Steering Committee of the West African Women Association (WAWA) to represent the South/South geographical Zone to set up the Nigeria Chapter of the Association under the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs & Social Development supervisory.

In the year 2007, Mrs. Ubeku got nominated as the Focal Person of the West African Women Association (WAWA/AFAO) Nigeria –Anglophone and Francophone of Economic Countries Of West African Sub-region; Association de Femmes de l’ Afrique de l’ Quest as a result, some National chapters in the ECOWAS Countries that became dormant; to build and maintain a new generation of empowered and independent women who are well informed on family values, country, health, environment, economy and financial management thereby contributing to the growth and development of women in West Africa and Nigeria, which includes those in Diaspora. She Proved her sterling quality and the National Chapter of Nigeria the West African Women Association(WAWA) has since stabilized remain focused across.
Mrs. Ubeku who happened to be the founder of Women Care Association of Nigeria (WOCAN) has since combined Coordination of the overall objective (AFAO/WAWA);in mobilizing women, youth’s participation in regional economic integration decision making.

The Nigerian Chapter of West African Women Association has since emerged steadily with support through the ECOWAS Gender Office, Regional Governing Body leadership in Dakar, Private sector, Federal and State Ministries combined individual efforts, commitment of dedicated technical team Networks across with a known Office address operating within the ECOWAS commission, outlet Abuja and the ECOWAS Liaison Office in Lagos, Nigeria.
Mrs Ubeku’s firm into her Networking slogan, so far show of strength kept the Nigeria National chapter visible and enabled her participation as Delegate to most of the ECOWAS HEAD STATE Summits held in Quadogouo, 2008, Abuja 2009, 2010 etc

In 2010, WAWA facilitated a 4-day conference of African Women Innovators seeking Solutions for Africa with funds sourced within its locality by bringing on board local organizations ably supported by the Federal Ministries and ECOWAS to ensure success, without the funds from the initiators PAWIIN/GWIIN UK under Mrs Bola Olabisi CEO, Global Women Inventors and Innovators Network.

In December, 2011 at the 9th Regional meeting held in Dakar, Mrs. Ubeku emerged as the current AFAO/WAWA REGIONAL CHAIR of the 15 Member States of the Economic Community of West African States ECOWAS.

In April 2012, Mrs Ubeku was among the ‘PRIDE OF WOMEN AWARD’ recipient award in Recognition of her Contribution to Women issued presented by WOMEN OF SUSTANCE.

In May, 2012, the New Nigeria Leadership Forum(NNLF) in Recognition and Appreciation of her Outstanding Attributes, Achievement and Commitment to Promoting Integrity, Patriotism and goog governance in the Nation, conferred on her LEADERSHIP INTEGRITY AWARD…

In April 2013 Mrs. Ubeku was presented Award for Economic Cultural and Professional development by NIGERIAN ISREALI ASOOCIATION in Lagos.

In September, 2013 Chief Mrs Ubeku & Husband Dr. Abel K. Betty Ubeku, who lives her life for the happiness and joy of others had been deservedly honoured with National and International Awards. The Apini Ladies Group, crowned her MAMA ADOBI II (Queen Mother) in Kpando, Upper Volta Region, Ghana, in November 1995. Also, in July 1998, Mrs. Ubeku was decorated with the 1998/99 Melvin Jones Fellowship (MJF) Pin and presented the MJF Award Plague at the Lions International Convention in Birmingham. It is the highest form of recognition conferred by the Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) and also, she became the 2nd person in the District 404, Nigeria to receive the Lions International Growth Award.

In Delta State, she received commendation from the Government where the Chief Judge of the State conferred on her, Justice of Peace, [JP] in April 2, 1998.

In 2002, in Delta State Capital Asaba, Mrs Ubeku was presented with AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE by Ministry of Women Affairs, Community and Social Development.

Further more, the University of Calabar Women Association presented an Award In recognition of her outstanding performance in the area of Community Development at the University ceremony, in 2004.
She received an award from her Isoko Development Union (Women’s Wing), A recognition award in 2005, for her Selfless and humanitarian Service by an NGO-Serendipity House Nigeria; Another Award, in recognition of her humanitarian services to the privileged and the less privileged of Isoko land in 2005.

In Nov. 2006, Anambra State Women Association Lagos(ASWAL) presented Award of EXCELLENCE in Recognition of her INVALUABLE CONTRIBUTION in her area of Endeavour and to Humanity

At the Young Women Christian Association of Nigeria (YWCA), marked its Hundredth year celebration of its Centenary Honour Ceremony Award in 2006, presented Mrs. Beatrice Obiageli Ubeku, an Award for her unquantifiable service to Humanity your support and Empowerment of Nigeria Women and Girls.

The Isoko Development Union(IDU WOMEN WING) Lagos presented Award in Recognition of her Humanitarian Services to the privilede and the Less Priviledge of Isoko Land 2007.
April 2008, Abuja Mrs.Ubeku received a ROLE MODEL AWARD along with a choice of 2 other recipients “Widows” who received the sum of hundred thousand naira in cheque each, (US$1000=Dollar) to enable them be equipped and build up entrepreneurship.
1998, Across the Africa Countries, Mrs. Ubeku was honoured as the Mama Lotu Adobi II (Queen Mother) in Kpando, Upper Volta Region, Ghana, 1995 among others.

She was honored by the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Head of State, His Excellency President Olusegun Obasanjo, A Prestigious League as a Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR.) of Nigeria, decorated with a MEDAL including a CERTIFICATE of National Honour (MFR) at the International Conference,Abuja 2003.
The Delta State Government awarded her a certificate of Excellence in Community Development in 1997. In May 1998, she received a special award for her Outstanding Achievement in Community Services at the Nigerian Women Awards (NWA) in Abuja. At the year 2002 marked “Celebration for International Women’s Day held in Delta State, Mrs. Ubeku was honoured with an AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE by the State Ministry of Women Affairs, Community & Social Development, Asaba 2002.

In the same vein, she has been very active in networking and collaborating with various NGOs and Community Based Organizations under the umbrella of the National Council of Women’s Societies (NCWS), an affiliate to International Council for Women (ICW), Lions International Clubs, YWCA, to name but a few, to champion the course of children and women awareness, as well as executive various developmental programmes at both local and international levels.

Chief Ubeku has been actively involved in championing the course of curbing the HIV/AIDS scourge. In 2002 and 2005 she executed an intensive educational programme on Awareness/prevention of HIV/AIDS and counseling for teenagers and school children in Isoko, Agbor, Aniocha, Ugheli, Sapele, Warri Local Government Areas of Delta State, and particularly the urban rural areas of Ajegunle, Ajeromi, Lagos State in conjuction with Shell Petroleum Development Company and other private sectors.

She has equally been involved with UNICEF’s health related programmes for the rural populace in Nigeria such as the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) and Complementary Food Production in Kano & Delta within the Niger Delta area. Through her efforts in association with other bodies, Delta State ranked 6th position of the 36 States in the Federation at the Annual Nutritional Health Review by the Federal Ministry of Health and UNICEF in Yola, 1997.

Since then her role into various activities in the field among different bodies, particularly her active lead role where she presented a Finished Craft work designed, twined together with other countries at the Great Wall of China for projecting the Nigerian Women at the Platform for Action during the Beijing World Conference’95, China 1995. This singular contribution earned her a Baton –Torch Light of Peace also received worldwide coverage of CNN network. In 1997/8 during the African First Ladies Summit hosted at Abuja International Conference as a delegate under National Council of Women Societies (NCWS), Nigeria, Mrs. Ubeku was among the Twelve (12) women nominated to steer the chapter of Nigeria, West African Women Association (WAWA) under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs. Her vision, commitment, continued and thereafter conceived an idea to effect commitment programmes, in realization into Evolution of Women Care Association of Nigeria (WOCAN), 1995 to bridge the gap through networking organizations generally.

Thus, again in 2005 & 2007, Mrs. Ubeku gained the support of UNICEF to raise and increase community mobilization, Sensitization Campaign on Gender Empowerment Participation and Prevention against female circumcision on Harmful Traditional Practices (HTP) and HIV/AIDS for community leaders, market women, youths and the girl child in the 3 UNICEF focused LGAs (Aniocha South, Sapele & Ughelli North) of Delta State. Similarly, she has played a prominent role on the Girl-Child and Mother/Child Maternal Care Education Survival, for the underprivileged.

She has successfully coordinated an International Youth Cultural Exchange Program (Nigeria – Finland) through the Lion 5-weeks Family Camping in Helsinki for the participation of the Local Nigerian child, students, youths and Orphans selected along with children from 22 other world countries in 2001. Again in 2003, Mrs. Ubeku led the Nigerian youths to participate at the UN/UNICEF workshop tagged, “A World Fit for the Children” Camp a Global Movement for Children in New York, under the Peaceways -4th Young General Assembly Session hosted in Romania.

OTHER ACTIVITIES:

As a Delegate to the ECOWAS Head of States Summits during its 39th Session, facilitated Mass Mobilization of Over 300 women from various organizations including civil society from the fifteen West African Countries were present on PEACEFUL Demonstration Against the KILLINGS of 7 IVORIAN Women in Cote D’ IVOIRE March, 2011.

A 2 day Collaboration with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Lagos Chapter on the International Law Conference on Women & Children with the theme “Upholding the Rights of Women & Children” HE –Dame Patience Jonathan was represented by the wife of Vice President Sambo @ NIIA July 2011.

Facilitated by ECOWAS-EU Strengthening the Grant Management Capacities of Non-State Actors (NSAs) in West African Accra, Ghana, October 2011. Facilitated NGOs/CBOs Awareness Campaign on climate change - Environmental Cleanliness; Theme-Stop the litters! Save the Environment!’ Theme: Carbon Credit and related to reduce effect of pollution on poor use of Stove -Kerosene Issues as it affects health-Women & Children November 2011.

Facilitated collaboration with Live Well Initiative (LWI) theme Health Wealth Partnerships Level GRAND HEALTH GHB April, 2012 more recently, in December 2011 she was appointed the Regional Governing Body of West African Women Association (WAWA) as Chairman in the 15 Countries of ECOWAS.

In Delta State Asaba, facilitated Global Climate Change summit involving various networks of organization for family Locality within Niger Delta region, to educate and bridge the gap between local communities within its environs and issues that affects the most vulnerable in January 2012.
As a delegate participant under the Federal Ministry of Power and the UNIDO) served as a Lead Discussant, Moderator at the launching of the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's initiative - Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) in Abuja Villa Banquet Hall on 23rd August 2012.

Happily Married to Dr. Abel K. Ubeku LLM, Phd, OFR.- (First Nigeria) to be Appointed Managing Director And Chief Executive Of Guinness Nigeria Plc & 1st Pro- Chancellor of Ekpoma University, now Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma, Edo State); An Author of two(2) textbooks published by Macmillan UK, which are used in the Universities, both in Nigeria and abroad, the Personnel Management in Nigeria (1975) & Industrial Relations in Developing Countries: The Case of Nigeria, (1983) His third book; Effective Management in a Developing Economy published in 2007 by Macmillan Nigeria. Also the pioneer of the Industrial training Fund (ITF) as the Secretary in 1971.

Also in the Industries, his career in Nigeria Tobacco NTC as Excellent leadership, treated as a Nigeria Trainer Expatriate Management the British American Tobacco Company Ltd. (BAT) in the U.K. 1962 and 1969. Postgraduate Diploma course in Personnel Management at the London School of Economics in 1964 and a course on Job Evaluation at Engineers House, Bristol, England in 1966. Dr. Ubeku’s Political Activities: On retiring from services of Guinness Nigeria Plc, he contested as a Presidential Candidate under the political part of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) during the 3rd Republic- Gen. Babanigada’s reign, Chairman of a political party CNC 1995-97 and founding group G34, PDP member and Board of Trustees. A Statesman, Outstanding Academic and Father to all beyond his family where he was the patriarch.
